Combined Defence Services Exam (CDS) is a competitive national exam conducted by UPSC in India for recruitment of the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy. It is one of the several exams conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to various government positions in India. The CDS exam tests candidates on a range of subjects, including English, General Knowledge, and elementary mathematics. Successful candidates are awarded a commission in the Indian Armed Forces as officers.

Conducting authority of the CDS exam is UPSC and the UPSC commission plans on releasing the CDS notification on 21 December 2022, for all the essentials of the examination.

CDS is conducted in 2 stages:

  • Written Examination
  • Personality and Intelligence Review

CDS generally consists of 3 papers (English, Elementary Mathematics, General knowledge) of 100 marks each. Every paper is given a 2-hour attempt time and the exam is conducted in different shifts.

English 100 marks; 2 hours
General Knowledge 100 marks; 2 hours
Elementary Mathematics 100 marks; 2 hours

Steps for the CDS 2023 Registration Process:

  • Visit the official website of the Union public service commission.
  • Click on the CDS registration
  • Register for the exam, choose your preferred branch and submit your personal details.
  • Print out the registration/application form
  • User ID and password are also generated for future updates and notifications in the exam.

CDS Eligibility

Eligibility Criteria of the CDS 2023 exam depend heavily on four standards i.e. Physical Requirements, Nationality, UPSC CDS Age Limit, and Educational Qualification. Candidates must fulfil all of these criteria in different sections to be eligible for the CDS exam.

Physical Requirements

Ø Candidates deemed as mentally and physically fit under the UPSC regulations are only allowed to appear for the CDS exam.

Ø Male candidates must stand at a minimum of 157.5 cm in height (157 cm for the Navy and 162.5 cm for the Air Force) to qualify for CDS eligibility.

Ø Mal-development or impairment of joint functions may lead to disqualifications of the candidate.

Ø Previous history of mental breakdowns may affect the chances of getting finalized or shortlisted.

Nationality

Ø  Any candidate with Indian citizenship

Ø Any subject of Nepal or Bhutan

Ø Any Tibetan refugee who migrated to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of settling in India permanently

Ø Any PIO (Person of Indian Origin) who migrated with the intention of settling in India.

UPSC CDS Age limits

The CDS age Limit is between 20-24 years which implies that the candidates are born not before 2nd July 2000 and not after 1st July 2005. This Number is fixed for all candidates in the CDS exam and candidates have to comply with the regulations to get finalized in the drafting process.

CDS notifications include vacancies that come along in the Combined Defence Services Exam. CDS vacancies for the year 2022 have been announced separately for every defense academy. The total number of openings differs in each of the 2 performing CDS exams. For the CDS 1 exam 2022, the total vacancy was 341 posts while for the CDS 2 exam 2022 the total vacancy was 339 making it a total of 680 vacancies.
